The small team behind NOGU firmly believes that life’s too short for meaningless jewelry. That’s why we’re constantly pushing the boundaries of what makes jewelry jewelry, and our handmade Firefly Glass collection is no exception.
Our Firefly Glass bracelets, necklaces, and earrings are the upgraded, luxury version of the glow-in-the-dark jewelry you enjoyed as a kid (because there’s no age limit on cool things, tbh). Even when they’re uncharged, they sparkle in the daylight like diamonds. But don’t get us wrong - they sparkle something crazy in the nighttime after you charge them.
Because our Firefly Glass collection is so different, it might be tough to understand how it glows in the dark, and it might also be confusing to figure out the best way to charge your fireflies. That’s why we’ve created this blog - it’s a figurative one-stop shop to all things Firefly.
THE FIREFLY FUNDAMENTALS
When we were designing our Firefly Glass here in Toronto, we wanted to make something that didn’t use any electronics. We believe that natural, inner beauty is more important than anything, so we tried to approach the Firefly glow from that same angle. After countless hours of research and experimentation, we found it - silver-activated zinc sulfide.
Yeah, that sounds complicated - we totally sympathize. But the beautiful glow that these zinc sulfide particles emit once exposed to light is stunning. And that was easy for us to understand.
SO… HOW IS IT MADE?
We’re glad you asked.
We pride ourselves on all our jewelry being handmade, and our Firefly Glass is no different. While the glass is being blown, we carefully suspend small particles of the silver-activated zinc sulfide within. This whole process is called “lampwork,” which is the reason why our Firefly Glass is different from our Mermaid or Galaxy Glass, for instance.
Because the process of embedding these particles into the glass is so delicate, each bead comes out unique and slightly misshapen. But let’s face it - perfect, identical jewelry was never up our alley. As we’ve said before, we’re all about being different and finding beauty in that difference.
Once the glass beads are crafted, they’re accessorized with a small .925 sterling silver or sterling gold vermeil NOGU tag and bead. At this point in time, all our Firefly Glass bracelets are made with an elastic cord to fit a wide variety of wrists.
THAT’S WICKED, BUT WHAT DO I NEED TO DO?
Another amazing question. It’s almost like we wrote it.
Since your Firefly Glass pieces have been kept inside beautiful gift boxes during shipment, they haven’t had a chance to charge. Granted, they still look amazing as-is, but you'll have to charge them if you want that stunning glow-in-the-dark effect. Here are the 3 primary ways to do so:
1. Use your complimentary UV Charging Light
With the purchase of any pieces from our Firefly Glass Collection, enjoy a complimentary, portable UV Charging Light (1 per order). It's a great way to charge your fireflies on the go! The direct UV light from these chargers will charge your fireflies to their max in just a few seconds.
Here's how to use the UV Charging Light:
2. Charge them under artificial light
If you place your Firefly Glass underneath a bright desk lamp, for instance, your fireflies will be fully charged in less than 5 minutes. That’s awesome, isn’t it?
(Secret tip for on-the-go charging: the flashlight on your smartphone will do wonders in topping up the charge on your fireflies. Just make sure to circulate the light across each bead so that they’re evenly charged)
3. Charge them under natural light
